This posture or Mudra can only be seen in a bodhisattva sculpture or Buddha statue because only those who have attained enlightenment can make use of this power. The gesture is broadly known in Buddhist mythology as the pose for pacifying the human or divine dangers that threatened the Buddha. The posture also symbolizes the power of Buddhist doctrines which reach every human being and which exist universally.

Though this posture is generally seen in images of Buddha standing up, the dispelling fear pose is also very popular with the Buddha sitting cross-legged, in a pose known as the Lotus posture. The statue brings inner knowledge and it gives spiritual comfort to those who wish to fight back feelings of jealousy. Jealousy is a very negative form of fear, so the dispelling fear acts against this imperfection and makes us you recover your self-confidence. The right hand has a profound meaning, as it assumes the Abhaya Mudra, which is the symbol of power and fearlessness. The left-hand makes a gift-giving gesture, taking the varada mudra. Thus the whole posture means that Buddha is preaching at the same time than giving out his spirit of fearlessness.
