Buddhism was originated by Siddhartha Gautama, born as an Indian prince during VIth B.C. He was married and father of a son, but realized the futility of the luxury in which he had grown up. After four emblematic encounters, with an old man, a sick man, a dad man and an ascetic, he decided to leave the luxury of the court to seek an antidote to the pain of life.
He went on an itinerant life and as he found no answer to his thirst for truth in philosophical speculations or ascetic practices. Therefore he decided to immerse himself in profound meditation. He came out of it ‘awoken’ to perfect truth, which is why the name Buddha, the ‘Enlightened one’ in Sanskrit, was attributed to him. The lotus shape that you can see carved on the palms of the statue is one of the characteristic signs of the Enlightened one.
