An orant is an artistic representation of a person at prayer in any religion. In the Christian religion early art shows a person, usually a woman, standing with arms outstretched in a gesture of supplication to the heavens. In Buddhism, the subject is usually kneeling, with eyes closed or open and hands pressed together at chest height in the classic posture of prayer. Buddhism is a doctrine which believes in the need to efface the ego and concentrate rather on compassion towards others and on inner wisdom.
In this beautiful piece we see the purity of heart of the praying person in the simple, clean lines of the carving, in the gentle smile on his lips, and in the humility of his posture.
When you purchase this statue you are investing not only in a work of art, but also in a daily reminder of our need to feed our inner strength with prayer and meditation, and to develop our sense of compassion to include all living creatures.
