In this piece, Buddha is in the Earth Witness position, depicted with his right hand reaching towards the earth and the left hand in his lap, palm upwards. This shows the earth touching mudra and the meditation mudra, a combination that denotes the marriage of Nirvana and Samsara, or wisdom and method. Mudras are movements made with the hand or the body to express what one is thinking, and are the basis of Buddhist rituals.
While Buddha was sitting under the Bodhi tree, he is said to have reached the state of enlightenment, and performed the earth-touching mudra to call the earth goddess to bear witness. Mara the demon is said to have challenged Siddhatha Gautama, stating that his spiritual deeds were greater than Siddhatha’s, calling upon his armies to testify to this fact. Siddhatha assumed the earth touching mudra and the whole world vouched for him, with the demon Mara being banished and Siddhatha acquiring enlightenment and then ascending to the state of Buddha.
This wonderful statue, carved in wood, then delicately gilded with 24-carat gold leaf, will bring you peace and enlightenment as he watches over you. The Buddha figure can be rotated on his throne to face whichever direction you choose, and will remind you constantly of one of the fundamental stories of Buddhist teaching.
