Hanuman can be seen facing to his right, holding his right hand up towards the sky with thumb and index finger touching. In his left hand he wields a sword, symbolic of his highly important role in the story of Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit tale. Behind him grow twirling, golden leaves which help to signify his air of royalty. As an aid to Rama, the hero who fights in the struggle against Ravana, the demon king, Hanuman is portrayed in a fierce yet just light.
Wearing a golden shirt and magnificent robes, Hanuman gives the viewer an interesting insight into the style and culture of Cambodia's past, as well as its mythology. His monkey-like face is obvious, as well as his tail, which can be seen in the bottom right-hand side of the picture. The artist has created a vivid display of colors which help to transform a blank canvas into a picture of this Cambodian legend which is bound to strike fear into the hearts of all who view it. A tasteful yet riveting design, this legendary piece will certainly to brighten up any room.
