Angkor Wat was constructed in the early 12th century as a Hindu temple complex dedicated to the god Vishnu. It was built by King Surayavarman II in the capitol of the Khmer Empire, now known as Angkor. He conceived it as his state temple and his final resting place. It boasts a moat and an outer wall that is more than 3 kilometers long. Inside there are three rectangular galleries, one above the other, and in the centre five towers.
Over the years the temple, like the country, gradually became Buddhist, and is still in use today as such. During the 20th century it underwent much restoration work, mostly to clear back the encroaching vegetation. It is universally regarded to be a harmonious example of Angkor architecture and is regarded with great national pride in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is located at less than 4 miles from the modern town of Siem Reap, where Artisans Angkor has its main showroom and craft workshops. It is an important source of inspiration to our young craftsmen and women.
