SOAPSTONE SCULPTURES

Also named “steatite” or "soaprock', the soapstone is a quite soft material which is notable for its high degree of resistance to acids and heat. In Cambodia, the soapstone from the province of Pursat (in the western part of the country) has been used to carve religious effigies, probably from the XVIIth Century. The glossy aspect of soapstone allows Artisans Angkor to produce by hand both precious objects inspired by the Angkorian traditions, and daily life objects which can be used as home decoration. Any variation in the color of the stone is inherent to the very nature of the material: its array varies from yellow-green to gray and deep purple. Therefore the color of the items may differ from the pictures.
